This is the third JMCE project we have executed, and all the planned activities should have been successfully completed if there was no impact of COVID-19. In terms of the overall implementation of the project, except for the postponement of two planned visits to Europe and the inability to invite European partners to participate the activities offline (only online participation), we have basically completed all the planned activities as planned: F.2.1. The successful completion of the three planned courses and the additional course of the public elective "Entering the EU" offered to the students expanded the positive impact of the project on the undergraduates in the three campuses. F.2.2. Completed the publication of three books, albeit with some minor changes to the themes originally planned for publication. F.2.3. The CES’s researchers of the project have successfully conducted research on the development of European integration in the new era. The research articles published by the CES’s researchers have exceeded the originally planned publications, and the leading team members of the project have published about 30 research papers at home and abroad, covering the economic, political, social and cultural, historical, legal and religious aspects of European integration. At the same time, they have completed the training of nearly 20 doctoral students, whose professional fields involve European economy, politics, socialcultural and the related areas.

7 activities are planned in F.2.4. Except for the two planned offline visits to Europe had been postponed to 2023, the rest were successfully held in Sichuan and other places (offline and online). In October 2020, the planned visit of the CES's researchers to European partners was not possible due to the lockdown brought by COVID-19, but the online international academic conference jointly organized by the CES and the School of Political Science of the University of Warsaw of Poland was successfully held. More than 50 scholars engaged in European studies from nearly 20 universities and think-tanks in Poland, Belgium.

After China opened for overseas visit in March 2023, the CES promptly seized the opportunity to send project manager to cooperating European universities to discuss the resumption of China-EU cooperation, which was welcomed by the cooperation universities and think tanks in Belgium, Germany, Hungary and other countries, and the subsequent visits of CES researchers were implemented, respectively, and the implementation of F.2.4.1, which had been delayed for two years. A planned round table at the University of Ghent, Belgium (4 July 2023), and a thematic seminar organized jointly with Hungarian partners under the F.2.4.5 programme (1 June 2023). F.2.4.7 The planned Chengdu Roundtable held in the summer of 2023 successfully invited three Belgian professors from the Free University of Brussels (VUB) to China, which were the first group of European scholars to visit the CES after the pandemic, and the roundtable discussion achieved positive impact.

Key members of project implementation team:

Director Jian SHI (main research direction: European Society, European Culture) is responsible for the overall organization, teaching and special lectures, leading research, guiding young teachers and doctoral students.

Vice director Xiang Deng (main research interests: European energy, Environmental protection) leads research, teaching & special lectures, instructs young teachers and doctoral students.

The Chair of the Academic Committee Prof. Dan YI (main research interest: European Culture) writes monographs, teaches & lectures, instructs doctoral students, and reviews related matters.

Project coordinator Zhuyu LI (main research interests: European Society and Higher Education) Event planning, organization and external liaison, special lectures, etc.

Key researchers (Prof. Feng DUAN (Linguistics), Prof. Chongfu ZHANG (European Religion), Prof. Zheng LU (EU Agricultural Policy), Prod. Yamei WANG (European Economics), Prof. Lei WANG (European History), etc.. They are all professors in various research fields of the CES, actively participate in the CES's activities, engage in professional research on Europe, related teaching, special lectures, publish research papers at home and abroad, and guide doctoral students.

During the implementation of the project, the above key members have published more than 25 research papers (at home and abroad), supervised nearly 20 PhD in total, and successively sent 12 young teachers and doctoral students to study in the VUB Brussels from 2021 to 2023. In Sichuan University, more than ten public JM lectures were held, and hundreds of teachers and students of various majors in the campus listened to the lectures.

The CES also organizes some young and middle-aged teachers who are interested in continuing to engage in European studies and actively participate in the CES's JMCE activities. They either return from studying in Europe or have visited and studied in Europe. For example, Dr. Tian YANG (Communication), Dr. Dong TU (European Political Party), Dr. Chunlin WANG (European Society), Dr. Ming CHANG (European Civilization and culture), Dr. Xintong CHEN (European Immigration Policy), Dr. Ping LIANG (European Society and Culture).

The CES also takes the opportunity of implementing JMCE to invite some part-time researchers to participate academic activities, participate in doctoral thesis and other related reviews, etc. Several of them are currently serving Chinese JM CHAIR professor, such as Prof. Xinning SONG (The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen)), Prof. Chun DING (Fudan University, Shanghai), Prof. HUANG Yanfen (Renmin University of China). Prof. Jizen FAN (from University of Shandong, EU Law), Prof. Hongjian CUI (Beijing Foreign Studies University), Prof. Xin CHEN (Institute of European Studies, Beijing Academy of Social Sciences), etc. Their roles as keynote speakers, coordinators and commentators in the academic discussions organized by the CES, as well as in the assessment of the CES's project submissions, are integral to the smooth and effective implementation of the project.

Through more than 10 years of efforts, the CES has implemented 3 consecutive JMCE projectsin particular, in the past few years, we have adhered to the implementation of the JMCE and received remarkable results. It has formed a comprehensive European research platform with relatively complete disciplines in China. It is the only European research centre that has continued to hold the national and international (including China-EU and China-Vietnam) academic conferences during the three years of the pandemic. Through the efforts of the CES, EU DAY, which was first established and maintained in China for 12 years ago, was still held during the period. Although it could not go out of Chengdu, the CES still insisted on holding various types of EU DAY activities on the 3 campuses of SCU. In addition to lectures for students, the CES also held thematic discussions on the epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, which received positive effects and influences.

The project also strongly supports and works closely with the JM Project (619907) implemented by Prof. LI ZY, we have held several national academic seminars on the theme, for example “Understanding the Future Visions of the European Integration”. European researchers from Belgium, Warsaw, the United Kingdom, Vietnam and other places were invited to participate online and join into exchanges and discussions. In particular, more young and doctoral students were attracted to engage in European research or were willing to engage in European studies, and it also brought positive influence to the domestic European research community and exert the positive influence of the JMCE project in the Eurasian academic community, during the pandemic.

During the period of 2020-2023, the CES has held offline academic round tables every year in Chengdu, and representatives of universities that are not blocked from the city have tried to come to participate. Due to the wide range of academic fields, the CES has been built into a relatively influential interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary European research platform in the past 10 years. Many students and young faculties reported their positive feedback.

Through these open academic activities, and also through those who get their PhD degrees from us are working in universities or think tanks around the country, the CES at SCU has become a well-known European research CES in China. Despite its remote location in southwest China, the CES at SCU still has influence in the Chinese Society of Europe, universities and think tanks.

During the period of 2020-2023, the CES has sent project managers and researchers to help young and middle-age European researchers from Chinese universities such as Renmin Univ. of China in Beijing, Beihang University, the Chinese Univ. of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology and other domestic universities to apply for and successfully establish a number of Jean Monnet module projects, and JM Chair Professor (Renmin Univ. of China), to help these universities expand their European and EU studies.

During 2021-2023, the CES will also assist SCU in selecting and sending a number of young teachers and doctoral students to visit and study in Europe for joint training. Expand the presence of SCU and CES both domestically and in Europe.

During the 2022-2023, the CES would actively cooperate with the Chinese company CATL, to carry out research on the risks and challenges of Chinese enterprises' investment in Europe, cooperate with partners across Europe, such as Germany and Hungary, conduct field research, and improve the visibility of EU in China through public lectures on EU knowledge for CATL’s employees. Actively expanded the CES's external publicity and domestic visibility.
