Earlier this year, Sichuan University successfully received the first group of 3 students from EU under the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window Lot 14. This month Sichuan University is pleased and proud to receive 7 additional exchange students from Europe, with 2 from Ghent University and 5 from University of Rome La Sapienza. All exchange students have finished their registration process and they will spend the next 6 or 10 months studying in the academic fields of their choice.
In order to facilitate their transition to the new environment, to help them make full use of the various resources, and to enhance their understanding of local Chengdu culture, Prof. Jian SHI, Vice-President of SCU, initiated a joint conference with scholars and administrators from multiple colleges and divisions, together with those European exchange students. Those present in the meeting included advisors of the European students, Dean of the School of Overseas Education, supervisors and staff members from International Office, and Academic Affairs Office. They discussed a wide range of issues which concerns and interests incoming students in an open and agreeable manner.
The conference started with Prof. SHI's welcome address. On behalf of Sichuan University and the European Studies Center, he introduced to the exchange students SCU's diverse departments and academic programs, its infrastructure and facilities, as well as latest research and educational achievements. Prof. Dan YI and Prof. Yukai ZHOU from Chinese Department made brief introductions to their fields of expertise and provided students with useful suggestions on their course selection.
On behalf of the 7 exchange students, doctoral candidate Pieter Verstraete from Ghent University expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the hospitality of Sichuan University. He especially appreciated this joint discussion which demonstrated the high efficiency and student-oriented principle of this university. Other students shared his view and maintained that the face-to-face discussion with their advisors had boosted their confidence and enthusiasm in the upcoming student life at SCU.
The arrival of these European students, in turn, will provide a valuable communicative opportunity for students and staff with an interest in the European Studies.
